Has anyone moved a couple of hundred miles from "home" with the family? How did the kids take it?
|
I've got a job interview 200 miles up north. Beautiful place to work, great, clean, safe place to live. Great schools etc. could keep the house down in London, rent it out and then rent up north for a few years.
Kids, two at primary, one at secondary, are dead against it.
Anyone done this? Just don't want the kids to be pissed off forever.

My parents moved when I was 13, hated it and barely spoke to them for a year. Moved again a year later then ok, but ruined my education.

I usually move away from home for a couple of weeks every year. Usually choose somewhere warm and by a beach.
The kids love it

Is it so cold up there that you are wearing mittens or socks on your hands when typing?
Or are your tits touching the keyboard again?

My Dad is from Chadwell Heath and my Mum from Canning Town.
Moved to Kent when I was a toddler and then to Cheltenham a few weeks before I started secondary school.
Can remember really hating it and being really cut up about it at the time, my Mum was really unhappy for a couple of years after.
This was all for my Dad's job, he then changed jobs again just before I started university after 8 years to this time go to Devon.
I've got three younger brothers and all ended up settling in the same places they were at university so no-one has anything to do with either of the places we moved to.
If I settled down and had kids I certainly wouldn't uproot my family like that, you get a lot of resentment and I don't think it was worth it in the long run.
Money is important but not that important.

My family moved up north in 2004 due to my dad's job. I was just about to go to uni at the time anyway so it didn't bother me really and I wanted to get away from people I went to school with in Chelmsford.
My skin was in Secondary at the time and I think was more reluctant to leave friends etc but understood why and she settled fine in the end.
In short, I think it depends how old your kids are, what their personalities are like and how attached they are to where they live and friends etc.

Moved from the UK to HK when the kids were 11 and 14 and both went on to finish their schooling there. They were against the move at first both both settled within a few weeks.
Kids are very adaptable and being at school makes it easy to make new friends. Yes it is easy to keep in touch but life moves on.
